Ice dams are one of winter's most destructive threats to Alberta homes. An ice dam forms when warm air escapes from your living space into the attic, heating the roof deck and melting the underside of roof snow.

As meltwater flows down to the cold unheated eaves and eavestroughs, it refreezes into a solid ridge of ice. Trapped meltwater behind the ice dam backs up under shingles, causing severe ceiling stains, ruined insulation, and wall mold.

3 Crucial Steps to Eliminate Ice Dams

1. Ensure Vented Aluminum Soffits Are Unblocked

Continuous cold airflow through soffit vents keeps your roof deck at cold outdoor temperatures. If insulation blocks soffit intake vents, heat gets trapped in attic eaves. Installing vented aluminum soffit panels ensures proper air circulation.

2. Clean Gutters Before the November Freeze

If leaves and sludge remain in eavestroughs when winter arrives, meltwater cannot enter downspouts. Standing water freezes solid, accelerating ice dam formation.

3. Verify Correct Eavestrough Slope & Hanger Fasteners

Sagging gutters trap pools of water that freeze early in winter. Re-sloping runs to ensure complete drainage prevents ice from building inside the metal channel.

4. Seal the Air Leaks, Not Just the Insulation Gaps

Insulation slows heat transfer; it does not stop warm air moving. The largest contributors to a warm roof deck are usually penetrations rather than thin insulation — bathroom fan housings, recessed light cans, the plumbing stack, and above all the attic hatch. Warm moist household air rises through those openings and washes across the underside of the deck. Air-sealing them with the appropriate rated material, then insulating over top, does more for ice dams than adding depth alone.

Why Alberta Roofs Are Especially Prone to Ice Dams

Ice dams need three ingredients: snow on the roof, a roof surface above freezing somewhere up the slope, and an eave below freezing. Central Alberta supplies all three more reliably than almost anywhere else in the country, and the chinook is the reason.

In a stable cold climate, snow sits frozen on the roof and very little melts. Here, temperatures can swing thirty degrees in a day and then drop back overnight, repeatedly. Each swing melts part of the snowpack, sends the water down toward the eave, and then refreezes it at the coldest part of the roof — the overhang, which has no heated space beneath it. Over a winter of these cycles, a ridge of ice builds at the eave and begins holding meltwater behind it. That standing water is what finds its way under the shingle courses and into the ceiling below.

This is also why ice dams are a poor indicator of roof age. We regularly steam dams off five-year-old roofs with perfectly sound shingles, because the problem was never the roofing — it was attic heat and a freeze-thaw cycle doing what it always does.

Warning Signs Worth Acting On

  • Large icicles along the eave. Picturesque, and a direct signal that meltwater is reaching a freezing overhang rather than draining.
  • A visible ridge of ice at the roof edge, particularly one that stays after the icicles have gone.
  • Uneven snow melt on the roof — bare patches above heated rooms while the eaves stay covered — which maps your attic heat loss for you.
  • Water staining on an interior ceiling near an exterior wall, usually appearing during a thaw rather than during rain.
  • Ice visibly filling the trough or plugging the downspout.

What Not to Do

The methods homeowners reach for first are usually the ones that cause the damage. Do not chip at an ice dam with a hammer, axe or garden spade — shingles are brittle at those temperatures and the tool finds them long before it finds the bottom of the ice. Do not use a pressure washer, which strips the protective granules off the shingle surface and shortens the life of the roof considerably. Do not throw rock salt or standard ice melt onto the roof; chloride corrodes aluminum trough, fasteners and flashing, and it washes down onto whatever is planted below.

And do not climb an icy roof to deal with it yourself. Roof falls are the single most common serious injury in this trade, and a snow-covered pitch in February is the worst possible surface to learn that on.

How Professional Steam Removal Works

Low-pressure steam is the only removal method we will use on a roof we intend to leave intact. A steamer delivers near-boiling water at low pressure, which cuts a channel through the ice without any mechanical force against the shingles. The operator opens drainage channels through the dam first so trapped meltwater can escape, then works the remaining ice back in stages.

It is slower than chipping and costs more per hour, and that is precisely the trade being made: the alternative methods are faster because they are damaging the roof. Steam removal addresses the emergency. It does not address the cause, which is why we follow it with a look at attic ventilation, soffit intake and trough slope so the same dam does not rebuild in three weeks.

The Right Order of Operations

If you are dealing with active ice dams now, the sequence that works is: remove the ice safely by steam, get the eavestroughs and downspouts cleared so the system can actually drain during the next thaw, then address the underlying attic heat loss and ventilation before the following winter. Doing the third step alone in mid-January will not help you this season; doing only the first step guarantees you repeat it every year.
