When installing new continuous seamless eavestroughs, one of the primary decisions is selecting the trough width. In Alberta, the two industry standards are 5-inch K-style troughs and 6-inch oversized K-style troughs.

Understanding Water Carrying Capacity

While a 1-inch difference might sound minor, a 6-inch eavestrough holds 40% more water volume than a standard 5-inch trough. Furthermore, 6-inch troughs accommodate larger 3x4-inch commercial downspouts, allowing massive storm surges to drain rapidly.

When 5-Inch Eavestroughs Are Ideal

  • Standard 1-storey bungalow or 2-storey residential homes with average roof pitch.
  • Roof valley areas with short to medium linear runs (under 40 feet per downspout).

When You Should Upgrade to 6-Inch Eavestroughs

  • Steep Roof Pitches: Steeply pitched roofs accelerate rain runoff into troughs at high velocity.
  • Metal Roofing Systems: Metal roofs shed rain and snow rapidly, overwhelming smaller 5-inch gutters.
  • Long Gutter Runs: Runs exceeding 50 feet where adding an extra downspout is architecturally undesirable.
  • Commercial & Multi-Family Buildings: Condos, retail plazas, and warehouses with expansive roof surface area.

How to Size a Trough for Your Actual Roof

Sizing is not a matter of taste. The number that matters is the drainage area feeding each downspout, which is the roof surface area multiplied by a factor for pitch — a steep roof behaves like a larger flat one, because water arrives faster and with more momentum. Once you know the drainage area, the trough has to be able to carry the peak flow that area produces before it overshoots the front lip.

As a working rule for Central Alberta homes: a 5-inch K-style trough with a 2x3 downspout comfortably handles roughly 600 to 800 square feet of drainage area per downspout on a moderate pitch. A 6-inch trough with a 3x4 downspout roughly doubles that. When a run exceeds those figures, you have two options — add a downspout, or go up a size. On a long unbroken architectural elevation where an extra downspout would be visually obvious, upsizing is usually the better answer.

The Downspout Matters More Than the Trough

This is the part most comparisons skip. A trough is a holding channel; the downspout is the drain. Putting a 6-inch trough on a building and then feeding it into standard 2x3 downspouts wastes most of the upgrade, because the restriction simply moves to the outlet. A 3x4 downspout has roughly twice the cross-sectional area of a 2x3, and that is where the real capacity gain lives.

It also matters for debris. A 3x4 downspout passes a spruce cone or a wad of poplar seed that would lodge in a 2x3 elbow and start a clog. On heavily treed lots in Lacombe or Sylvan Lake, the larger outlet reduces how often the system backs up quite apart from any rainfall consideration.

Alberta-Specific Reasons to Consider 6-Inch

Two local conditions push the decision toward the larger profile more often than a national guide would suggest.

The first is spring melt. A Central Alberta roof can carry a substantial snow load, and a chinook can convert a large part of it to water over a single afternoon. That melt event produces a sustained flow rate that no rainfall design figure accounts for, and it arrives while the downspout may still be partially restricted by ice. The extra volume in a 6-inch trough buys tolerance for exactly that scenario.

The second is freeze-thaw cycling. Water standing in a trough overnight freezes, and ice expands. A wider trough with a correctly sloped floor drains more completely before temperatures drop, so there is less standing water to freeze in the first place. It does not make a system ice-proof — nothing does — but it reduces the cycle count that eventually works hangers loose and splits mitres.

Cost, Appearance and the Honest Trade-Off

Six-inch material costs more per linear foot, uses heavier-gauge aluminum, and requires larger hangers and outlets, so a full 6-inch installation typically runs somewhat above the equivalent 5-inch job. Visually it is a heavier line on the roof edge. On a modest bungalow with short runs and light tree cover, that extra cost and visual weight buys you very little, and we will say so.

Where it earns its keep is on steep pitches, metal roofs, long architectural runs, large or multi-family buildings, and homes that have already demonstrated the problem by overshooting during heavy rain. If your existing troughs spill over the front edge in a downpour while the downspouts are running clear, that is not a cleaning problem — the system is undersized, and no amount of maintenance will fix it.
